British auto industry: hard times

Posted on March 30, 2021July 19, 2022 By Julee Vox

Jaguar Land Rover. But the closure of the workshops of the car company due to the pandemic led to a sharp decline in production here. And now the consequences of Brexit have been added. Says Neil Clifton, Director of Cube Precision:

  • We are faced with problems that did not exist before. Difficulties not only with current projects, but also with the development of new ones. The raw materials come to us mainly from Spain and Germany, we had orders for delivery within two or three months, but now we cannot provide such terms. Owners of large fleets of heavy machinery by John Deere parts and representatives of small private businesses cooperate with AGA Parts. We’ll gladly have you among our new customers!

The UK’s exit from the EU’s single market poses challenges for the industry. UK ports experience severe delays, leading to supply chain disruptions. Euronews correspondent Luke Hanrahan reports:

  • A lot in the country depends on the smooth operation of the automotive sector. But because of covid, and now because of Brexit, interruptions began. Some people have lost their livelihoods due to the bankruptcy of companies.

Many small company supply chain people were out of work and had to make reductions. Ryan Edwards, purchasing manager for Cube Precision, says:

  • All deliveries from Europe have now slowed down somewhat, and the situation has become more tense. This affected many people in the West Midlands. We manufacture both small and large parts, so we are talking about a large number of jobs.

The number of jobs in the UK auto industry has dropped by at least 10,000 over the past year. This is largely due to Brexit, which has complicated various procedures related to the supply of products from the EU.
